Young Jamaican team wins AgriHack Talent Caribbean contest at 13th Caribbean Week of Agriculture

And the winner is… Node420, from Jamaica. The team’s application, also called Node420, offers real-time weather analysis and automatic yield forecasts for farmers. The AgriHack Talent Caribbean contest, organised by CTA and partners, came to a close during the 13th Caribbean Week of Agriculture, held this week in Paramaribo, Suriname. The winning teams designed agricultural apps that can forecast crop yields, improve pest management and put farmers in touch with market outlets.

Second prize went to CropGuard, from Barbados, an app that seeks to enhance food security by helping farmers to protect their crops through pest diagnosis, monitoring and control. Third prize was awarded to UNICODE, from Suriname, with an application called Agri-Kari, designed to help farmers manage their land and sell their products. (more…)

Winners of the AgriHack Talent Caribbean announced!

Eight teams of young application developers, coming from six Caribbean countries took part in the Regional Finals of the AgriHack Talent competition at the Caribbean Week of Agriculture in Paramaribo, Suriname from 5 – 9 October 2014. During the various sessions at the finals, the participants received advice from experts in agriculture and ICT, and they also had to fine-tune the agriculture applications that they have developed. The last sprint was to pitch and present their products before an audience comprising of participants attending the Caribbean Week of Agriculture and the Jury. On the evening of 9th October 2014, the winners of the 2014 AgriHack Talent Caribbean was announced during a cocktail organised on the occasion of CTA’s 30th Anniversary. (more…)

Discover and engage with the AgriHack Talent programme

Do you want to discover, further discover or engage with the AgriHack Talent Program?

CTA has  launched the AgriHack Talent programme aiming at encouraging young people to develop ICT applications, entrepreneurship spirit and businesses for agriculture. It includes competitions to develop, via hackathons or other coding sessions, ICT applications  for agriculture, capacity building sessions and incubation and promotion for best Talents. The ultimate ambitions are to enhance the agriculture sector through innovations and to support youth livelihoods. For now activities are being implemented in the Caribbean and in East Africa. The initial results have been very promising. CTA is looking for partners to help take the programme to the next level.

Winners of the St Kitts and Nevis leg of the AgriHack Talent Caribbean announced

Basseterre, St. Kitts — The combined team of People Employment Programme (PEP) graphic designers and marketers, and Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) programmers and researchers has won the St. Kitts-Nevis leg of AgriHack Talent Caribbean competition.

Three teams participated in the local challenge named CODE SKN Sustainable Challenge 2014, two of which were made up of PEP Graphic Design trainees. The winning group had four members from the CFBC and two members from PEP, and will be travelling to Suriname for the regional finals to be held October 6-10. (more…)

“Team Agri-Info” wins Trinidad-leg of AgriHack Talent Competition!

Friday 12th September, 2014 saw the awarding of four students of the Success Laventille Composite and St George’s College with the winning prize for the Trinidad leg of the Regional AgriHack Competition. The Form Four students Kris Adams, Mikaeel Andrews, Nicholai Rajkumar and Jairaj Singh call themselves ‘Team Agri-Info‘. They were also adjudged the People’s Choice along with ‘Team Agriology‘ – a group of all girl students of Success Laventille Composite School. (more…)

ICT for agriculture, a review of Ensibuuko’s incubation

Ensibuuko is a web and mobile application that enables savings and credit cooperative societies (SACCOs) of smallholder  rural farmers mobilise savings, receive and disburse loans easily and quickly using SMS and Mobile money.

Ensibuuko is working to improve financial inclusion for rural smallholder farmers in Uganda by using an ICT-mobile solution to enable quick, convenient and secure transfer of finances amongst Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS)

For the last six months, Outbox has been providing office space, business advisory and network access to Ensibuuko as part of it’s support to the winners of the ICT4Ag hackathon, initiated by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (). As such, we would like to share our learnings from supporting Ensibuuko.

A little more about the 8 hubs selected for the AgriHack Talent Caribbean

Following the Call for Expression of Interest that was launched in the framework of the AgriHack Talent Caribbean, the following eight Hubs have been selected. They include formal technology innovation centres, software company, university labs, as well as public and research institutes supporting entrepreneurship and ICT for development in the Region. They are charged with staging national hackathons or competitive coding selection events. The winning teams from the national events will move on to the regional finals that will be held during the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) to be held in Suriname from 6 – 12 October 2014. Eight Caribbean partners selected to participate in the Agrihack Talent Caribbean programme

Eight Caribbean Technology and Innovation Hubs have been selected to participate in the Agrihack Talent Caribbean competition, which seeks to support the development of ICT innovations and entrepreneurship in agriculture by young tech talent. The event is being staged by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (), in collaboration with institutions including the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and ConnectiMass Hub (cHub).
