A little more about the 8 hubs selected for the AgriHack Talent Caribbean

Following the Call for Expression of Interest that was launched in the framework of the AgriHack Talent Caribbean, the following eight Hubs have been selected. They include formal technology innovation centres, software company, university labs, as well as public and research institutes supporting entrepreneurship and ICT for development in the Region. They are charged with staging national hackathons or competitive coding selection events. The winning teams from the national events will move on to the regional finals that will be held during the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) to be held in Suriname from 6 – 12 October 2014. An incubation process will follow for winners to fine-tune their products and favour actual roll-out. You will find below brief notes on institutions selected:

  • Slashroots Foundation (Jamaica)

Slashroots is a civic tech non-profit that leverages technology to create solutions to social problems endemic to the Caribbean region. SlashRoots works with governments, development organizations and civil society to improve public service program design and delivery, with a focus on open innovation and user-centred design. http://www.slashroots.org

  • The Community Hub Corporation (Trinidad and Tobago)

The Community Hub is an operating Tech hub which empowers youth and communities by leveraging ICTs, art, entrepreneurship and environmental programming. Partners include Fujitsu Caribbean Ltd, Digi-Data Systems Limited, Microsoft Trinidad and Tobago, Columbus Communications Trinidad Ltd (Flow) and the Basel Convention Regional Centre for the Caribbean Region. http://www.mycommunityhub.org

  • Create Caribbean (Dominica)

Create Caribbean Inc. is a research institute committed to Caribbean development projects using digital tools. It partners with the Dominica State College to implement its research and teaching agenda. http://createcaribbean.org/

  • Quintessence Consulting Inc (St Kitts)

  • National Council for Science and Technology (Barbados)

The National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) was set up in 1977 under the aegis of the Ministry of Finance and Planning mainly to coordinate local activities in Science and Technology(S&T).   • Telesur Multimedia Innovation Laboratory (Suriname)

The Telesur Multimedia Innovation Laboratory (TMIL) is an initiative of Telesur (leading telecom operator in Suriname) and is implemented in collaboration with the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (ADEKUS). TMIL should become THE place for entrepreneurial and creative talent in Suriname.
